Macau visitor arrivals up 9% month-on-month in May


The number of visitors arriving in Macau reached 866,063 in May, up 9.0% compared to April and representing a better than 5,000% improvement over May 2020 which was at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), there were 473,808 overnight visitors and 392,255 same-day visitors in May, with the average length of stay dropping closer to pre-COVID levels from 3.7 days in May 2020 to 1.6 days in May 2021.

Of the month’s 866,063 arrivals, 795,389 were from mainland China and 336,314 of those utilized the Individual Visit Scheme. Visitors from the nine Pearl River Delta cities in the Greater Bay Area totalled 429,712, of whom 46.7% came from Zhuhai, DSEC said.

By mode of arrival, 764,547 entered Macau by land with 80.9% of those via the Border Gate. Visitor arrivals by air and by sea totalled 75,244 and 26,272 respectively.

For the first five months of 2021 combined, the number of visitor arrivals is up 4.7% year-on-year to 3,399,310. However, June numbers are expected to take a hit as a result of recent outbreaks in Guangzhou and Foshan which have seen Macau restrictions once again.
